Required checkups before installation

  • Before installing the CLIFF electric sauna heater, verify that the maximum amperage of the main circuit breaker complies with the parameters of the heater.
  • Ensure that the power rating (kW) of the heater matches the cubic size (ft³) of the steam room. In case there are any uninsulated brick, tile, or glass walls in the sauna room, an additional volume of 4,8 ft³ must be added to the sauna room for each 1 ft² of such wall.
  • The minimum safety distance from the ceiling and the walls of the steam room that apply to the positioning of the electric sauna heater are presented in Table 1.

Installation of CLIFF electric sauna heater

When positioning the heater, ensure that there is a safe clearance between flammable materials and the external surfaces of the heater.

  • When choosing a suitable location, ensure that you can conveniently throw water on sauna stones when sitting on the sauna bench.
  • Observe that the location of the heater would not create hazardous situations during its use. Make sure that people would not have to pass too closely by the hot heater.
  • Table 1 gives an overview of the minimal safety distance that should remain between the heater and the ceiling and the walls of the steam room.
  • Power cable inlets are located on the bottom cover of the heater.
  • CLIFF 6, 9 and 11 sauna heaters are attached to the floor with the supplied brackets. Mount the bracket to the heater leg as shown on the figure below and fix it with a screw that is suitable for the floor material.

Connecting CLIFF electric sauna heater to the power supply

Only a certified electrician may connect the heater to the power supply.

  • The power cable of the heater must meet the requirements of UL 62 in US and CSA 49 in Canada.
  • It is forbidden to use a PVC insulated non-heat-resistant cable as the power cable of the heater.
  • The junction box must be waterproof and located up to 19.7 in (50 cm) from the floor.
  • It is recommendable to connect the unit to the mains power supply without an earth leakage circuit breaker.
  • The cross-sectional area of the cable and maximum amperage of the circuit breaker are provided in Table 2 (240V) and Table 3 (208V).

Table 2 Power rating kW (240V) Room Circuit breaker (A) Wire size (AWG)
CLIFF 6 6 176.5-353 ft³
5–10 m³
30 10
CLIFF 9 9 318-530 ft³
9–15 m³
50 8
CLIFF 11 11 353-600 ft³
10-17 m³
50 6

Table 3 Power rating kW (208V) Room Circuit breaker (A) Wire size (AWG)
CLIFF 6 4.8 160-265 ft3
4.5-7.5 m3

  • Open the cover of the heater’s electrical box.
  • Connect the power cable with the terminal board, as shown on the circuit diagram.
  • Close the cover.
  • Fix the cable in the cable clamp.

Disassembling CLIFF electric sauna heater fins for stacking sauna stones

CLIFF electric sauna heater is narrow and tall. Therefore, it is easier to lay the sauna rocks when the fins of the heater are removed. You can do it with 2 blocks  that are supplied with the heater.

Refer to the figure below and follow these instructions:

1. Loosen the nuts of the threaded rod on the bottom of the heater by 0.11 in / 5 mm.

2. Push both props between the fins of the heater.

3. The fin is released from both sides.

4. Remove the fin carefully from the joints, first from the right end and then from the left end.

Important! Pull the fin away from the heater straight, and without turning the fin or using force – this enables one to avoid bending the tenons.

  • Repeat the same steps for disassembling the fin that is located under the removed fin.

Replace the fins by following the provided instructions in reverse order. The fin must be attached to the joint first from the left end and then from the right end.

Sauna stones

  • Sauna stones with a diameter of 1.2-2 in / 3–5 cm are suitable for CLIFF electric sauna heaters. It is recommendable to use round sauna stones in HUUM sauna heaters. Round stones complement the design of the heaters and provide milder steam. Our product range includes round olivine diabase sauna stones which are sold in packs weighing 33 lb / 15 kg.
  • Of course, sauna stones from other manufacturers may be used in HUUM sauna heaters, but in such case, it is recommendable to choose stones that are specifically meant to be used in sauna heaters and to avoid decorative stones as those might break easily.

Installation of the safety railing of CLIFF electric sauna heater

  • When mounting the safety railing, place the bracket around three fins of the heater so that the external edge of the bracket contacts the head of the threaded rod.
  • Fix the sides of the bracket with a bolt and nut. Tighten the bolt so that the bracket is securely fixed around the fins of the heater.
  • Attach all 8 brackets to the heater.
  • Connect the wooden profiles to form the angular guard.
  • Place the wooden guard on the brackets and fix them with screws. The guard is complete!
  • Regular maintenance with a breathable wood preservative helps to extend the useful life of the wooden parts of the safety railing. Use products that are intended for sauna! As a rule, it is sufficient to perform the maintenance once a year, but the maintenance interval might be shortened if you use the sauna frequently.

Installation of the embedding flange of CLIFF electric sauna heater

  • Prepare the opening for the embedding flange. Refer to the figure below.
  • It is important to maintain inclined cuts in the corners for attaching the screws.
  • Position the slats so that the fit around the opening.
  • Drill screw holes with a diameter of 0.12 in / 3 mm to the central fixation points of the slats.
  • Fix the slats with the supplied screws. You’re set to go!

Installation of the reflector of CLIFF electric sauna heater

  • Attach the reflector to the desired side of the heater so that the upper hooks of the reflector lock around the fourth rib from the top of the heater. Ensure that all hooks are fixed – this prevents horizontal movement of the reflector. Ready!
  • Utilization of the reflector reduces safety distances from flammable materials by half.
  • Important! It is easier to perform the mounting tasks if you first stack the sauna stones and then attach the reflector to the heater.
